Working on Concept Exercise 2 was a fun but somewhat challenging experience. People seemed alarmed or surprised that we were asking to talk to them. However, once we were able to get in front of Jane Sidwell, an academic adviser for the School of Education at the

University of Houston, she appeared delighted to speak with us, urging us to publish the story so more people would know more about the minor the story was focusing on — applied behavioral analysis.

Her passion for the minor was apparent, as she supplied us with nearly half an hour’s worth of interviews when we could only use a few moments of what we discussed in the video. However, when we asked if we could record, she seemed uncomfortable and only obliged when we agreed not to show her face. I wonder if that will be a common issue I will run into more in my journalistic endeavors?

It was challenging navigating her request, but we were able to use the video of the interview — just her office floor in frame. We pulled from the interview moments we thought were most informative and would be most useful for the audience’s understanding.
